Heartbreaker in the Championship Game

Highline Loses 1-0  to Peninsula in Overtime

Nov. 13 -  for 103 minutes the Highline defense, constantly under pressure by Peninsula, kept bending but never broke. Through the first half, the second half, and the first overtime, after losing All-Stars Maya Gray and Destiny Guerra from injuries, the Thunderbirds played Peninsula to a draw, waiting for its chances.  But in the second overtime, at 103 minutes, Peninsula finally broke through when Bri Vallente scored the championship winner on a point-blank shot that Highline keeper Rachel Thompson, spectacular in goal throughout the playoffs, had no chance at all to stop. And so Highline found itself falling just short in its championship pursuit for the second consecutive year. It is a bittersweet ending to an excellent season in which the Thunderbirds won the NWAC West Division, finished at 17-3-0 for the season, and had six players chosen as All-Stars.
